It was often talked of in my time as a desirable resort, but the means of communication were not then so perfect as they now are, neither was the place so well known. Unlike most of the other stations on the eastern shores of the Bay of Bengal, Akyab stands on the sea, fully exposed to all the winds that blow. In bygone times, it had anything but a good reputation for healthiness amongst Europeans, and this was believed to be owing in great measure to the practice of cultivating rice in and immediately around the european quarter. If I mistake not, it was Sir Arthur Phayre, then Commissioner of Arracan, who first put a stop to this practice, and with most beneficial results.
